The Mage Changes in Warlords of Draenor

Undead Mage, Firelord GearWarlords of Draenor officially landed on Nov. 13, 2014 and is now up to patch 6.1.2.

The idea behind the changes is generally this: Bliz feels that button bloat (too many abilities on the action bars) has gotten unmanageable for most, so is working to trim that. What that means for your Mage is that some abilities are going away and other are changing in one way or another.

Also, Crowd Control has gotten a bit out of hand, in their view. Some of the various changes being made will reflect that view.

Will your Mage still be recognizable? Yes, just a bit streamlines. Read on and tell us what you think.

Fire Mage Going for the Gold in the Proving Grounds

A Silver Achievement will be required to enter Looking for Raid (LFR) and for random heroics in Warlords of Draenor, coming “on or before” Dec 20, 2014. The Warlords of Draenor expansion pre-order has just been announced and along with it comes an “instant 90” token.

Hopefully this page will help you Fire Mages to burn you way to that silver and beyond. (Also see our Fire Mage DPS and Fire PvP pages and our Mage leveling guide if you’re not yet 90.)

How do you get to the Proving Grounds? Just ask your trainer. What are the rewards? Just the achievements and possible bragging rights.

Proving Yourself: Gold Damage AcievementThe big weakness for Fire is getting enough Crit to allow enough Pyro procs to do the damage. It might be helpful to pray to the Fire Gods and offer up sacrifices to be able to get some crit streaks. While this page won’t help with the prayers it will lessen the need for them a bit. Fire can get the Gold and can make headway through at least a few of the Endless Waves. Yes, Frost might be better for the PGs, but where’s the challenge in that? 😉

Frost Mage Damage Guide

How to do Damage as a Frost Mage in PvP

The Frost Mage has been the Mage PvP Spec for some time now. With proper use of your abilities you can throw out a lot of damage. Changes that came in patch 5.4 made your pet more valuable and changed your Mastery. Your pet’s freezes and your Frostbolt slows give you added PvP utility over that of Fire or Arcane.

See below for your attacks, cooldowns, and how to put it all together for maximum damage.

Stats for the Lethal Frost Mage

  • Spell hit at 6% > Int > Haste > Crit > Mastery > Resilience & PvP Power
  • See our Frost Mage PvP guide for details on gems, enchants, etc.

Haste is your #1 stat as it reduces the cast times of your spells and makes for faster Living Bomb ticks. You get faster polymorphs, faster CCs, faster globals, etc.

Fire Mage Burst

Fire Mage Rotation: How to Burst

Fire Mages live and die from their pyro procs, which result in instant, free, Fire Mage Rotationempowred Pyroblasts. No procs and the damge done falls of a cliff.

The “standard way” to do things is to fish for procs with Fireball or Scorch, get the Heating Up proc, boost it with Inferno Blast, and lob it at the target. Perhaps with an Alter Time in the mix to get another proc.

Then you fish for the next proc. Here’s how to get several Pyrp procs and do a lot more damage.

Note: While this guide is aimed at PvP it’s very applicable for PvE. The burst roations are the same.Read More »Fire Mage Rotation: How to Burst

mage 5.4 patch notes

The Mage 5.4 Patch Notes and Changes

The biggest change in 5.4 is for the Frost Mage. Your Mastery has changed. You no longer do increased Mastery damage Vs frozen targets. Now, a portion of the damage done by Frost bolt and Frostfire bolt is stored and your next Ice Lance will unleash those icicles. Your pet damage is also increased and various spells were buffed, such as Living BombIce Lance, and your pet’s Waterbolt damage.

Frost did get a nerf, Frostbolt‘s damage has actually been decreased a bit.

The Mists of Pandaria Mage

Mage in PandariaWith Mists of Pandaria the talent system, as known in Cataclysm and earlier, has been flushed and replaced by a completely new system. Some of the old talents are dead, others have been rolled into the new talents and abilities. This will mean that your effectiveness will more due to your skills in using your abiltites rather than having the “best” talent build. Well, Ok, it was always that way, but now it’s more so.

Other changes:

  • The ranged slot is gone. You can still use wands, just not equip them and your main weapon at the same time. On the other hand, it sounds like wands will be buffed.

Feel free to share, pin, or comment and let us know what you think.
